“Regulate the breathing and thereby control the mind”

BKS Iyengar

Breathing is one of the most basic and important human functions –

So how is it that so many of us manage to screw it up?

I speak from experience – on certain days, when work is stacked up and i’m running from appointment to appointment, i often find myself breathing shallow and fast

They’re the days when i feel some kind of cloud looming over my head.. The days when there is an impending feeling of stress, or pressure..

I see it happen in the gym and on the mats too.. Training intensity starts to ramp up and people start sucking in short, shallow breaths, trying to manage the situation at hand as best they know how (struggling)

Check out any study on it and you will find that this kind of breathing kicks off a cascade of bad health effects:

  • Weight gain
  • Increased stress levels
  • Mental fog
  • Irritability
  • Poor digestion

BOOK QIGONG WORKSHOP

Everyone I’ve spoke to about this says they regularly experience this too .. (in honesty i think i know only 1-2 people who don’t have breathing problems)

Training in the gym, rolling BJJ, crossfitting, running, even sleeping..

It’s a result of our environment – we work crazy hours.. We have financial pressures.. Overcrowded social schedules.. A constant desire to “Get it all done”

It doesn’t take long before all of this gets on top of you.. You only have to look at the amount of self medicating that goes on at the pub on weekends to notice that most people are looking to ‘blow off some steam’

This has a direct effect on your training too – I’m talking about your ability to get stronger, faster, more powerful, shed body fat, build muscle etc

Quality recovery is the key to increased performance

Without optimal recovery, these attributes we want so bad (and work damn hard for) slip by..

You might Get The Work Done in the gym.. But fail to Get The Work Done OUTSIDE of the gym

Poor breathing habits leads directly to:

  • Raised cortisol levels (stress hormone)
  • Poor digestion
  • Anxiety
  • Weight gain
  • Muscle wastage

“Did you know that 70% of the toxins inside of your body are removed through the lungs? Breath is an essential element to life, and yet today we’re using less and less of our lung capacity. Think about it. When you’re stressed is your breath deep or shallow? You’d be surprised how often we hold our breath!”

Tony Robbins

Good quality rest, relaxation, sleep and digestion are ESSENTIAL for optimal recovery.. Breathing is the very first step in dramatically improving all of these functions

“It’s amazing how many big jacked up athletes don’t know how to breathe!” – Stanley Tam

So How Do I Learn To Breathe Better?

Like anything, you just need to be taught how.. The technique is simple and has been practiced by the ancients for many years.. Ayurvedic Meditation, Yoga, Tai Chi, Kung Fu and most other Ancient physical practices have been emphasising the importance of breathing since the beginning of time

People have been doing this shit for THOUSANDS OF YEARS, and you my friend, are behind the 8 ball on this one (myself included)

We want to help you take control of this function and experience the numerous health benefits for yourself.. We have a very special and rare opportunity coming up this February —

My good friend, and lifelong Qigong practitioner Stanley Tam will be teaching a Qigong Foundation Workshop here at our gym

(*pronounced ‘chee-koong’, bro)

*I met Stanley on the mats in a BJJ class.. He had quite a few years on me (and a black belt) and he asked politely for me to go easy on him. Turns out he was just being ultra-polite and i didn’t need to go easy at all.. During the roll he was making a bunch of curious sounds with his nose and mouth – expelling air forcefully, inhaling in way that made me think he had some kind of ‘plan’.. I knew he had some super-power that i was unaware of.. At the end of the roll i asked what those breathing techniques he was doing were and he said simply “Qigong”

Qigong is an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates breathing techniques with physical postures and focused intention..

Stanley will be teaching an ancient recovery exercise from Qigong called the ‘Six Harmony Gong’ – a concept which utilizes movements and breathing to regulate the body’s flow of energy
